UC4 Adapter Automates Management and Control of Virtual Machine Workload

VMware integration ensures dynamic control of real and virtual world

Vienna, Austria, October 30, 2008 – UC4 Software, a leading global provider of workload automation, job scheduling and IT process optimization solutions, today announced the availability of a new adapter that allows VMware control tasks, such as PowerOn/Off, Reboot Host and Create Snapshot, to be embedded into IT processes managed by UC4 Workload Automation Suite. This powerful functionality supports organizations needing to automate management, backup, provisioning and monitoring of their virtual machines and hypervisors.

“Our research shows that increased complexity and skill shortages are among the leading challenges in virtual systems management (VSM),” said Andi Mann, Research Director for leading analyst firm, Enterprise Management Associates (EMA). “Workload automation directly overcomes these issues by embedding knowledge into VSM tools, establishing processes, and freeing up resources. With the dynamic nature of virtualization, sophisticated workload automation is not just an option – it really is a necessity.”

UC4 Workload Automation Suite complements VMware Lifecycle Manager by automating the creation, cloning and deployment of virtual machines, based on time, events and other actions. Dynamic provisioning of commonly used configurations, maintained in VMware Lab Manager, can be automated with UC4. Integration with VMware Stage Manager eases the migration and distribution of new and updated IT services into a production environment.

The UC4 adapter for VMware was developed in collaboration with BenefIT Technologies, a VMware GOLD authorized consultant partner. Commenting on the integration Menny Tsarfarty, chief technology officer, BenefIT Technologies said, “Organizations that have implemented virtualization as part of their consolidation strategy are challenged with an increasingly complex IT landscape and have difficulties finding skilled staff. What UC4 has delivered is an environment in which actions that need to be taken managing IT application workload can be automated and synchronized with the managing of virtual machine resources.”

With UC4 Workload Automation Suite, customers can become more agile, dynamically creating or cloning virtual machines to match peak processing demands. Incorporating VMware control tasks into critical application and infrastructure processes can improve manageability. Without the need for manual intervention, enterprises benefit from improved virtual machine utilization, increased resilience, operational efficiency and business flexibility, while helping to contain energy costs and reduce turnaround time for jobs.

“Extending UC4 Workload Automation Suite to support VMware allows our customers to optimize the use of their IT resources in meeting their business objectives – whether that be maximizing throughput or reducing power consumption,” said Franz Beranek, CEO, UC4 Software. “This will help them in driving IT efficiencies while ensuring they get the performance, productivity and high availability out of their real and virtual machines to meet their end user service agreements.”

IT Growth Under Control Thanks to UC4

Kommunale Datenverarbeitungszentrale Rhein-Erft-Rur (kdvz) controls client-server systems with UC4...

VIENNA, August 19, 2008 – UC4 Software, a leading global provider of workload automation, job scheduling and IT process optimization solutions, today announced that Kommunale Datenverarbeitungszentrale Rhein-Erft-Rur (kdvz) has selected UC4 Workload Automation Suite to centralize management and to control of cross-platform batch processing.

“For us, as a data processing center, UC4 Workload Automation Suite offers the possibility to establish a high level of automation within a very complex infrastructure. This means less workload for our employees while raising the quality level of our service,” said Christian Mueller, project leader at kdvz.

Based in Frechen near Cologne, kdvz is an IT service provider for 37 local governments and runs the fourth biggest data processing center in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Currently kdvz runs more than 100 servers with different operating systems (Windows, Linux, UNIX, Netware). Process automation is not an alien word at kdvz. The data center has accumulated decades of experience and in-depth knowledge, especially in mainframe environments. The declining use of mainframe systems and rise of new client/server applications and corresponding growth in the number of jobs have dramatically increased the need for process automation in the kdvz client/server environment. The distribution of workload across multiple servers meant that manual scheduling and control was not possible – there just wasn’t time enough.

Kdvz needed to find a way to control their processing activities more efficiently and selected UC4 having evaluated available solutions. In addition to providing centralized job scheduling, UC4 Workload Automation Suite allows kdvz to control dependencies, automate file transfers and output management processing. Minimizing the manpower to handle jobs, taking care of housekeeping, backup/recovery and system administration tasks supports kdvz in raising the quality of service it delivers to its local governments. With UC4 Workload Automation Suite, kdvz is centralizing the management of its decentralized infrastructure. Currently, there are more than 150,000 jobs running per year. With a constant increase in IT processes, the number of jobs is also expected to grow.

When building up the infrastructure special consideration has been taken to ensure highly reliable platform, because job scheduling is a central system component. “Using UC4 Workload Automation Suite we could significantly raise the productivity, which was absolutely necessary due to the increasing number of processes and jobs”, said Christian Mueller, summing up the successful project implementation.

About kdvz
The Kommunale Datenverarbeitungszentrale (kdvz) Rhein-Erft-Rur based in Frechen near Cologne is an IT-service provider for 37 local governments and runs the fourth biggest data processing center in North Rhine-Westphalia. Members of the administration union are the local authorities Düren, Euskirchen and Rhein-Erft-Kreis and 34 cities and communities from these administration units. Kdvz is a full-service-provider offering networking and data center capacities, procurs and installs IT-components and realizes Internet presence. The administration unit employs 110 people, was founded 1966 as a BGB-community and exists in its current state since 1978.
