Automation becoming essential in government datacenters
Feb 10, 2012

The role of the IT architect is changing in the federal government, as agencies and departments try to find ways to mold critical legacy systems and cloud computing solutions into an effective IT environment.

Citing a recent report from Forrester Research, Federal Computer Week explained that most federal enterprise IT architects are already overworked trying to keep systems afloat. Cloud computing and virtualization are adding a subsequent layer of complexity that can be difficult for IT employees to manage.

Datacenter automation is becoming critical for federal agencies and departments as they are quickly becoming overwhelmed by the diverse range of needs arising within their systems. According to the news source, much of this complexity is created by a large-scale project to consolidate datacenter infrastructure and use cloud computing wherever possible. As a result, Forrester's research found that IT architects will face much more challenging workloads that will put more pressure on IT when it comes to delivering operational success.

A similar trend is taking place in the datacenter service provider market, where consolidation is happening at an even faster pace and the need for automation is becoming critical to meeting client needs.
