Enterprise Automation: Removing Risk and Improving Business Processes across Departments, Geographies, and the Cloud — EMA (Dec. 2009)

Every company has a unique approach to executing technology-driven business processes. Processes such as invoicing, procurement, and supply chain, though commonplace, are different for every company and always mission critical. However, in today’s businesses, these processes are also complex. There are multiple handoffs between computer-executed and manual tasks, between applications such as Oracle E-Business Suite and SAP, or even between a company and its business partners. And although process integrity is a hallmark of high performing businesses, many companies lack an automated means to ensure that these often complex process flows complete every step successfully.

In response to these challenges, process management has become a key competency. As a VP of Operations for a large global financial services firm told EMA in a focal interview, “Certainly, automation is one of the keys for a company of this size, but automation alone doesn’t cut it. The key is to synchronize automation, personnel, and processes. With money as tight as it is, it is extremely difficult to work in an environment that has no standards or processes.”
